Abstract
Abstract
Introduction: The role of agency or autonomy in shaping identity has long been a fundamental human inquiry. This study examines perceived agency during experiences of psychological distress in the transition to adulthood, situated within an individual's evolving narrative identity framework.

Method: This applied qualitative research employed a narrative methodology. Participants comprised eight individuals (aged 18-23) seeking counseling at Shiraz University's Counseling Center between 2021-2023.They were purposively selected based on clinical interviews and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10; Kessler et al. 2002), confirming significant psychological distress The data using McAdams' (2001) semi-structured life story interview were examined, gained depth through supplementary interviews, and were analyzed via thematic analysis following Brown and Clarke's (2006) six-stage model.

Results: The results indicated that emerging adults estimate their agency through foundational themes: 1) mastery of internal states, 2) efficacy in external environments, and 3) attributional patterns for confronting psychological trauma.

Conclusion: External efficacy within social interactions—particularly caregivers' responses—appears to validate internal information (thoughts/feelings). Furthermore, attributing psychological traumas to malleable factors may enhance one's sense of life agency.
