Background: The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Frankl''s group semantic therapy on cognitive flexibility and tolerance of ambiguity in individuals with borderline personality disorder traits.
Method: The research method was semi-experimental with a pre-test, post-test design with a control group. The statistical population included all individuals with borderline personality disorder traits who had referred to Isfahan counseling centers in 1403. The statistical sample consisted of 30 individuals who were selected by purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups. The research tools included cognitive flexibility questionnaires (Dennis and VanderWaal 2010) and tolerance of ambiguity questionnaires (McLean, 1993). The experimental group was exposed to 8 sessions of Frankl''s group semantic therapy, and the control group did not receive any intervention. The data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance.
Results: The results showed that Frankl''s group semantic therapy was effective on cognitive flexibility and its components including perception of different options, perception of justification of behavior, perception of controllability, and tolerance of ambiguity in people with traits of borderline personality disorder in the post-test phase (p< 0.001).
Conclusion: Frankl''s group semantic therapy led to improvement of cognitive flexibility and tolerance of ambiguity in people with traits of borderline personality disorder. Therefore, this treatment can be used to improve psychological components in people with borderline personality disorder.
