Background: Bipolar II disorder comorbid with heroin use leads to significant impairments in cognition, perception, and the ability to plan for decision-making. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine the effectiveness of transcranial direct current stimulation on pain perception and considering future consequences in men with bipolar II disorder comorbid with heroin abuse.
Method: This study was quasi-experimental with a pretest, posttest, follow-up, and control group design. The statistical population consisted of men with bipolar II disorder comorbid with heroin abuse who had referred to treatment centers in Isfahan in 2024. In total, 32 individuals were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group underwent 10 sessions of tDCS intervention. Data were collected using the McGill Pain Questionnaire (2009) and the Consideration of Future Consequences Scale by Joireman et al. (2012). Data analysis was conducted using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).
Results: The results indicated that tDCS significantly reduced pain perception (F=27.71), (P<0.000), increased consideration of future consequences (F=29.10), (P<0.000), and decreased immediate consequences (F=30.37) (P<0.000).
Conclusion: tDCS may serve as an effective intervention for improving pain perception and enhancing consideration of future consequences in men with bipolar II disorder comorbid with heroin abuse, with potential clinical applications for enhancing cognitive and emotional functioning in these patients.
