Background: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) entails various emotional and cognitive challenges for children and adolescents, underscoring the importance of its study. The present study is aimed to compare non-adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies and justice sensitivity in adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and normal peers.
Method: The methodology of this study was descriptive in nature, utilizing a causal-comparative approach. Subjects of the study were 136 adolescents (68 with ADHD, 68 normal subjects) between 12 and 14 years old that selected by multistage cluster random sampling and screening methods. Instruments of the study include the SNAP-IV Questionnaire, Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale, Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and Justice Sensitivity Inventory.
Results: The results of a MANOVA revealed that mean score of adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder for the components of non-adaptive emotion regulation (i.e. self-blame, other-blame and catastrophizing) is significantly higher than of normal peers. No significant difference in rumination was found. In addition, mean scores of the adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder was significantly higher than members of the other group for the component of victim justice sensitivity. No significant differences were found between the two groups for the components of observer and perpetrator justice sensitivity.
